A Year in Review Through My Lens, Welcoming the New Year
A Visual Prelude to the New Year
The transition from one year to the next carries a sense of anticipation, a deep breath held as we step into the unknown possibilities of the future. In this prelude, I’d like to explore the power of storytelling through the lens, of capturing the essence of the year that was and setting the stage for the new one. In a world of constant visual storytelling, every photograph is a brushstroke on the canvas of time. As we reflect on the passing year, each image becomes a memory in a unique narrative, portraying the emotions, experiences, and evolving themes that have shaped my Photography journey. I’ve personally never been one for an artist retrospective, but I believe doing so isn't just a backward glance; it's a forward leap for one’s career. The anticipation of what lies ahead adds a layer of excitement to this reflective journey. It's a celebration of the artistic evolution and a preview of the creative wonders yet to unfold.
Reflecting on a Year of Captures
Delving straight into the heart of the matter—capturing moments. The highlights, the themes, and the trends that defined the year through the lens. This past year has been pivotal, prompting reflections on the trajectory of my art. The start of the year boasted strong projects, from a personal Valentine’s collaboration with the boyfriend to a captivating editorial with @JaneDoeDrag, culminating in highlights of a bonding project to last, and a beautiful Red Hand-Draped-Tulle Dress. These moments, spanning January to April 2023, are showcased here.
Themes & Trends:
To combat a lack of inspiration, I attempted monthly mood boards based on Color, Birthstone, and Flower of the Month. Though a promising idea, the struggle to balance personal projects and the business side of my art led to its abandonment. Mid-May marked a turning point as I joined an independent boutique, offering valuable insights into the business aspect of my craft. The significant challenge left was reigniting my creative drive, which quickly became the lasting relationships I built, and the next creative challenge/project there was to overcome. The pinnacle of my year unfolded with ASHwell’s Backyard BBQ & Hoedown, an event by a Queer-oriented Non-Profit. From Two-Stepping Drag Queens to a Dessert Auction and a Good Ole BBQ, capturing these moments marked the year's end on a high note. View the captures here. Beyond individual highlights, visual themes threaded through my work. Trends like the prominence of the color red and specific lighting angles, such as Camera Left Loop Lighting and the occasional Rim Light, defined my photography narrative.
The Artistry Behind the Lens: Techniques and Insights
Behind every photograph lies a tapestry of creative choices. Here, we unravel the techniques & decisions that brought the Images to life. Photography is not just about pointing and shooting; although some may like it to be. There is a whole process behind creating the beautiful images you see. It can change varying from Project to Project, yet Personal Project workflow commonalities tend to stay the same. I’m a Moodboard kind of guy! Anything from a color scheme to a fashion trend can start a mood board “flow”. I work to create a consistent story of Images that may not all look the same but have commonalities in variables like Lighting or Color. Just from that alone I can make a call sheet, as detailed as I need, to communicate and share my vision with other collaborating Artists. This doesn’t include weighing in all factors like technical thinking, casting artist, or even the little doodles I draw of lighting setups so I know what to bring the day of the shoot! The glossy finish of a photograph often conceals the challenges faced during its creation. From battling unpredictable weather to coaxing natural expressions from subjects, behind the scenes there is dedication, perseverance, and a love for what I do.
Navigating Through Different Genres
Photography is a versatile medium. The human face, with its myriad expressions, becomes a compelling subject. Portraits go beyond mere representation; they encapsulate stories, emotions, and the intricacies of personality. I started my Journey through Studio Portrait Photography, which led to my specialization and love for Studio Photography as a whole. When deciding to call myself a Commercial Studio Photographer the biggest thing is in letting people know I can do more than one genre of Photography. I found myself niched down just a tad much and since have veered into the realm of event Photography which tends to have its lighting challenges and puzzles, making it all the more fulfilling.
Collaborations and Projects: A Deep Dive
Photography often thrives in collaboration. Behind many captivating photographs, including my own, is a team working in harmony. Whether it's coordinating lighting setups, assisting with equipment, or brainstorming creative ideas, teamwork enriches the final product. This acknowledges the collaborative spirit that enhances the quality of visual storytelling. Sometimes, a photograph transcends its digital or printed form to become a limited edition, a collectible piece of visual art. I want to treat all of my works like they will become Limited Editions.
