A Portrait Photographers experience traveling from Austin, TX to New York for the first time.
Growing up I found the idea of traveling just as invigorating as the next person; so when I had the opportunity to work and save up… I did! I started working around junior year and by my senior year in high school I had saved up about $2000. With that I went to one of the places I had always wanted to go. The big city… New York!
The best part about traveling to New York was the fact up until that point I was training my eye to see the world from a way I wanted to as a Photographer. I find Photographers tend to view the world in a way of what makes the best composition. Composition, simply put, is how one tells a story through their work. You can have a photo that is technically great but doesn’t tell a great story. One thing that became very apparent to me in New York was that finding composition was not a problem.

Every one just seemed to be in their own little world and it was as if it was my job to capture those moments of them together. This need to take pictures didn’t just appear around people, rather it gave me the inspiration to take pictures of things that weren’t even close to my niche of photography. In that 3 day trip I learned more about myself and photography more than I ever had before. Just in the little time I was there I tried land scape photography, long exposure photography, couple photography, etc. The problem is though, when I think upon it, these are all things I could have done at home without spending money to travel.
I thought by going on a trip I would finally be going somewhere worth taking a photo of. This trip was one of the greatest experiences of my life… but I think I might’ve been slightly naive. Composition can be found anywhere, so before you think you need to explore the hottest locations, try looking in your own backyard from a photographers perspective.
